A post made by Mary McIntosh (page 18) in a message board forum,
in response to right-wingers posting about Clinton's stance on Vietnam (which right-wingers frequently use as a "defense" for Bush's cowardly actions)
July 9, 2001

I have much more respect for the person who independently takes a stand on issues of importance than I do for this scion of privilege who remained oblivious to the real issues in the Vietnam war. Bush is still clueless and uses patriotism as a prop. This joke of a patriot who can't even recite the Pledge of Allegiance disgusts me to no end.

Ancestors in several branches of my family served in the Revolutionary war. My father and all of my uncles were veterans serving in all branches of the military. Three of my brothers have served. Now my niece and my son join the ranks of volunteers in the Navy to preserve that right to take a principled stand. They do so at at a time when the military falls under the erstwhile "leadership" of a man who has made a mockery of our rights, freedom, and democracy by stealing the office of the presidency itself.

Bush is someone who chose to squander his youth and much of his adulthood while others either fought the wars, protested against them, or actively worked to build a better society. At least they did something besides pass their time in a drunken fog. Bush has gone one to squander the resources belonging to others in his business ventures. Now he choses to squander our nation's resources and good name so that he can wear our nation's highest office like a frat pin. I, for one, will continue to protest the theft of our votes and democracy--a right my family continues to fight for.
