08-23: Help put the Good Guys back in Charge
"For over a year a single Senate seat has served as the sole check on the ambitions of this administration to plunder the national treasury on behalf of its friends. The administration has tried to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling by its allies in the oil industry. It has supported high oil prices by increasing federal purchases of oil and threatening a multi-billion dollar war in the Middle East. And it winked as its oil and gas buddies manipulated the West Coast energy market, creating a fictional shortage that permitted energy companies to quintuple their profits while energy-starved businesses in that region faced economic ruin. Worse, it has set a terrible example for corporate accountability by the actions of its own top officials. Bush took corporate loans he now would ban. Cheney profited from insider sales that make Martha Stewart's look like window dressing. And they all looked the other way as friends in high corporate office pillaged their companies of billions of dollars and then left shareholders and employees high and dry. It is clearer than ever that "compassionate conservatism" has proven to be no more than crony capitalism at its worst. So do something about it!"

08-09: Help Us Save Our Democracy
This request for help is directed to citizens and to elected officials. We are in the process of contacting people across Massachusetts, in an effort to organize ourselves into groups that will call, visit (and harass) our representatives in Congress. We want them to hear how concerned we are about the lack of democratic input into the debate over Iraq, and we want to challenge the disastrous directions our foreign policies are heading under Bush. The contacts for this project are:

Ann Eno 978-692-5483 annenough@aol.com
Pat McSweeney 508-822-2882 patmcs1@juno.com

There is also a listserv established for this project. People interested in joining can send a subscribe letter to DemocracyCentral-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Please include your phone number, and congressional district, if you know it.

06-13: Protect the Right to Vote!

Out of all the rights that we enjoy as citizens, perhaps the most fundamental is our right to vote. Ever since the controversial 2000 elections, one fact has become clear: reforms are necessary if we are to ensure that the votes of all Americans are counted fairly. Both the House and Senate have now passed legislation in response to the 2000 election. Unfortunately, both the House bill (H.R. 3295) and the Senate version (S. 565) contain measures that would threaten individual privacy and voter participation. House and Senate negotiators are now meeting to resolve the differences in their bills; now is the time to press them to remove these harmful provisions.

CROSS- FLORIDA CARAVAN

"Florida Grandmas are mad as hell! We know political corruption when we see it! Yet, we've been portrayed across this nation as too stupid to vote! ENOUGH is ENOUGH! We're taking our message on the road. We will drive a slow caravan of cars, trucks, RVs, and maybe even buses through central Florida culminating at a protest destination in Orlando. We will travel at a minimum speed on I-4 no faster than 45mph to show that we not only can drive but we can vote too!"
The new date for Caravan of Cause is August 11, to meet in Orlando at a rally scheduled for 2:00pm.We currently have 14 volunteers for the Caravan of Cause and we need more. If you want to participate in organizing one of the biggest car caravans in FloridaÕs history please contact me by phone at (727) 501-0268 or email. Can you help line up cars in Miami, Tampa, Daytona, or Tallahassee for a slow, Bush dissenting trip to a grand rally in the Central Florida Fair in Orlando? Can you help with making phone calls or sending out emails? Can you help with publicity? Any help with this huge event promises to be rewarding for you and for us all in November.

TELL ASHCROFT TO BACK OFF!

"Attorney General John Ashcroft is trying to overturn Oregon's Death with Dignity law. No real surprise, or is it? After all, John Ashcroft built a career on standing up for states' rights. And now he's trying to silence the voters of Oregon. Why is he trying to butt in where the federal government doesn't belong?..."

To all activists from Montana, Missouri, Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota:

Your letters to the editor of your local and state newspapers are BADLY needed. As you have probably read by now, Republicans have singled out five senators up for reelection, who are running a close race, and they (the Republican Lie Machine) has gone on the attack against Max Baucus, Jean Carnahan, Tom Harkin, Tim Johnson, and Paul Wellstone. Bush participates in the radio and TV adds that accuse these five senators of putting partisan interests "ahead of those of the nation." The five senators' act of treason: Voting against Bush's so-called economic stimulus package which once again redistributes more wealth by borrowing money (that our grandchildren will owe) to give a second huge tax break to the elite and to corporations such as Enron (slated to receive 250,000,000, unless that gift has been deleted in the face of Enron's collapse).
The constituents in these five states will see and hear these ads and need to be told WHAT it was that these five senators were voting against.
I'm not from any of the five states but wonder if those who are might form a group and keep a tally, etc. of letters to editors. I'm always surprised at how many people read letters in their local papers. The loss of them all, and IMO especially Paul Wellstone, would be a crushing blow to us all.

Help Greg Palast get media exposure

Greg Palast (http://www.gregpalast.com), American journalist who reports for the BBC and the London Observer, has written a book, THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY with new material on Enron, the bin Laden family and, of course, the 2000 presidential election with the forward written by Joe Conason. Deliveries are set for sometime in March.

If enough of us ask, we can get Greg on Larry King Live (http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/larry.king.live/) and C-Span's Washington Journal. That will make it easier for the publisher's PR people to book him on network news programs. This is a totally grass roots effort to get this information out and we need everybody's help. Greg has been there for us since the beginning. If it wasn't for Greg's articles on the stolen election, none of this would have ever been in print.

Let's all get behind this effort and make Greg's new book a best seller. Here's the contact information:

C-Span's Washington Journal
journal@c-span.org
Phone - (765) 464-3080 Fax - (202) 393-3346
C-Span
400 N. Capitol Street, NW
Washington, DC 20001

On the left column, you can submit program ideas right from the website.

Greg will be promoting his book through a book tour in the Spring. If they gather, he will come, so if you think you would like to be involved in bringing Greg to your town for book-signings, put your feelers out now.

a great suggestion from The Fallout Shelter discussion list

Write to the NY Times

This suggestion was posted on a mailing list, and it's a good one:

We need to get on the case of editors all over the country, let them know we are "out there" and we're very angry. Let them know we want them to focus on Bush's wrongdoing - wherever it exits - with the same "passion" and "devotion" they applied to harassing the Clintons.

One place to start would be to e-mail Howell Raines, Executive Managing Editor of The New York Times. He trashed Clinton daily for eight years over Whitewater and then lost interest when there were NO charges brought against the Clintons.

Let Howell Raines know you, we, are damn angry. Enron is vastly more scandalous than Whitewater EVER was, and Howell Raines knows that.

Raines' email address: Raines@nytimes.com

Take Action to Save Social Security

If someone offered you less money for more work, would you take it? No, you wouldn't. But that's exactly the deal Bush's Commission on Social Security wants lawmakers to pass.
